Pimp My Bookcart

Every year the creative minds at Unshelved present "Pimp My Bookcart." Now, librarians know what a bookcart is. It is simply the cart we use to reshelve materials.
Pimp My Bookcart shows the artistic side of a profession largely believed to stick to the uniform order of Dewey. Check out some of these carts and let us know if they don't make you smile.
Perhaps next year, our very own Beatties Ford Road will throw in our hat to compete against these fine bookcart designers.

Early Voting Rocked!

Early voters came out November 1 for an amazing 4 hour wait to cast the ballot. We are proud of all of our voters! The line wrapped around the building. Between the band in the front lawn and the impromptu kids' football game in back, we had a community event.

Showing off the Goods

So we are doing our best here to persuade our patrons to read as much as possible. Reading can help your memory abilities, your vocabulary and your all around knowledge. To promote our books, the staff has done an excellent job at drawing attention to particular titles.

The Children's Section receives this attention as well. With so many great books to choose from, this helps parents narrow down the search at least a little.

Everywhere you look, there is a great book you can take home and read!

New Favorite! LibraryThing

LibraryThing can help you organize your list of books! For those of us who choose to use the public library on a regular basis, we can have a difficult time remembering which books we already read. This can be especially helpful when requesting titles without seeing the cover.

All you have to do is create a username and account and start loading in titles that you have read. My favorite part is that I can note which books in a series I still need to read. It is all right there added in by people in LibraryThing.
Check it out!

Word of the Day

Cacophony- noun 1. harsh discordant mixture of sound. 2. dissonance; discord.

-Oxford American Desk Dictionary and Thesaurus 2nd. ed.

The great cacophony of arguments over the future of libraries made many book lovers anxious of the technological advancements.

Word of the Day

Antediluvian-1. of the time before the Biblical Flood 2. very old or out of date.
-Oxford American Desk Dictionary and Thesaurus 2nd. ed.

How very antediluvian a person would have to be to not know who Bill Gates is!

Check back tomorrow for another word of the day!

Spring Break

As many librarians know, Summer and Winter Break pale in comparison to Spring Break for the students of CMS. Some venture in to research colleges, others starting to apply for summer jobs. MySpace.com and Facebook will be the other crazy popular reasons to come to the library. As mature individuals with the ability to go unchaperoned, they will make their decisions accordingly as to how they spend their time.

For parents who are unfamiliar with MySpace, we invite you to MySpace for Parents. This class will examine just what MySpace is and what dangers your young adult may face.

Why hello there!!

Welcome to the first posting on the BFR Blog!!! Today is rather calm at our branch, and thus we are going to take a little time to bring you up to date on the goings-on at our library.

One of my very favorite events we had at our library was last Nov. (Nov. 2007) with the Marian Anderson String Quartet. This very talented group of women came to our humble library as a part of the musician series presented by the Friends of Music at Queens University here in Charlotte.
